This review is from: Nikon 28mm f/1.8G AF-S NIKKOR lens (Electronics)
About me: Been an avid photographer for over 20 years... I've used Leica, Nikon, Canon SLR's... currently using Nikon D800, and have recently updated my collection of lens and in particular FX lenses.

I have many Nikkor D lenses and few G lenses, but recently I bought this 28mm f/1.8G and the 28-300mm VR lens. Both of these are FX lenses (for full-frame cameras like D4 and D800/D800E), and they have superb sharpness. I use the 28-300mm for my travels, and it's my all-purpose lens, and I got this 28mm prime in large part to (1) large aperture of f/1.8, and (2) the fast focusing.

With regard to the large aperture, there are two key benefits I was looking forward to have and it did not disappoint. First, it gives a beautiful background blur (bokeh) and was able to isolate subjects with sharp focus while producing a creamy background. However, you cannot expect this lens to produce the same bokeh as that from the 70-200mm f2.8G VRII (which I also own). Again, these... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast wide prime, June 18, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Nikon 28mm f/1.8G AF-S NIKKOR lens (Electronics)
I have been looking for a wide fast prime recently for my Nikon D7000, and had almost pulled the trigger on a Sigma 24 or 28mm f1.8 when I got the news of the pending release of the Nikon 28mm f1.8. I decided to hold off and ultimately I bought the Nikon.

I own several Sigmas (10-20mm, 150mm macro and 150-500 telephoto) and consider them all good values, but none are compatible "as-is" with the newer Nikon bodies in terms of autofocus in Live-View/movie mode.

My need was specifically for a wide prime (I have a Nikon 50mm f1.8) for indoor shots. With f1.8 I am a full two stops faster than my current wide lenses (Sigma 10-20 and Nikon 16-85mm) at f3.5-4.0. That's ISO 800 in very low light instead of ISO 3200 at 1/60 sec - a big difference!

So - how's the Nikon? Overall I'm quite happy. The 28mm f1.8 combination is just what I needed. 28mm is wide enough to capture the entire scene - even in fairly small rooms. When too wide the newer high-MP bodies... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good lens, June 22, 2012
This review is from: Nikon 28mm f/1.8G AF-S NIKKOR lens (Electronics)
Optically, the lens is superb, it's a light sucking monster with beautifully buttery bokeh.

It's got some flaws though that keeps me from giving it a perfect score.

-It has lots of vignetting wide open on FX and film cameras. Not a big issue, and can be corrected in post. However if you shoot above f/5.6 it becomes a minor issue.

-The lens does exhibit some visible distortion, again not a big issue and something that can be fixed in post.

-The biggest thing that bothers me about the lens is that it looks and feels cheap. It's got that nasty kit lens feel and look to it, and is feather light.
The light weight may or may not be a good thing for you. On one hand, the lightness makes carrying the camera kit easier.
on the other hand, the lack of weight does not stabilize the camera well for longer hand held exposures.

All in all, I think Nikon released a winner that will be a part of my kit for years to come.
